TOP 10 REASONS STUDENTS SHOULD NOT TAKE THE NEW SAT!

As March 2016, the date set for the unveiling of the new SAT approaches, the College Board has released more and more information about the New SAT, including four practice tests. These tests spell out the changes that had been forecast by the SAT, including:

1. A return to the old 1600 scale
2. An optional essay
3. No guessing penalty
4. Four (rather than five) answer choices
5. A decreased reliance on calculators
6. More depth rather than breadth in the Math section
7. A more socially relevant pool of vocabulary

What these changes demonstrate, as a whole, is a sense that the new SAT will be more closely aligned to Common Core standards rather than what it was in the past: essentially an IQ test. And these changes only confirm many industry experts’ suspicions: the new SAT is not a test for those who are not racially or financially marginalized. In short, groups that traditionally prepare for (and score well on) standardized tests will not be well served by the new SAT. As a result, FLEX advises such students to stay away from the new SAT. Why?

1. The purpose for the change to the SAT is to eliminate unfair advantages.

While the College Board has come up with a great deal of rhetoric as to the reasons behind the change, it is no secret, even to the College Board, that one of the major factors to the change has been the ongoing criticism that standardized tests are unfair to those racially and financially marginalized groups that don’t have the means to prepare for the test. In fact, much of the new test is tailored to eliminating the advantages given to those who historically do well on the SAT. 

2. There is no curriculum for the New SAT.

All new SAT curriculum from SAT test prep companies will at best be an approximation and at worst be inaccurate. Even the four tests released by the SAT give only a cursory sense of what the test will be like compared to the data that has been accumulated about the old SAT over the years. In short, Class of 2017-2018 students will be the guinea pigs for the College Board itself as for test prep companies looking to develop curriculum. Instead, consider:
